The Feminist Collective Project Launched!

I am proud of these inspiring Lebanese women who’ve put some great efforts to make this project happen. I’ve met some of the founders of this project in Beirut the past year, they’re good people and I have high hopes for this project.

One thing I dont like about their website, however, is that it’s mostly in English, and English is just not our region’s language and we cannot make a change adopting other people’s languages. After all, language is about communication, even though I think it’s much more than that, but I do not believe that any change could happen addressing the English-speaking people when they’re are, perhaps, more familiar with feminism. Unlike a blog, a project that has goals to achieve in a certain region needs to address the regional people in their very language. God knows that the very reason that I am hated by some Syrian bloggers who write in Arabic for my posts on LGTB were written in Arabic, not in English.

In other words, it’s easier to write in English about a topic that is far from familiar to the Arab world. Not to say that I think the west supports LGTB rights, I mean, in the west, they’re all about “free talking”.

But I am sure they’ll be working on this issue in the near future. Anyways, back to my sisters over here, check their core of values:

- Domestic migrant workers are employees and should have all the rights of employment, starting with respect and equality.

- We have a responsibilty to be smart consumers since what we buy and where we buy from are political as well as personal choices that effect us all.

Here is a list of things they believe that need to be changed:

- We are supposed to be smart and educated, but only to a certain extent.

- We are supposed to go out into the world, but only if we are chaperoned by a male family member.

- Throughout our lives, we have to prove that we are good daughters and then good wives and then mothers.

- We are supposed to want to be wives and mothers.

- We are all supposed to be strictly heterosexual.

- We are expected to look desirable but not act on our desires.

- We are expected to look good but not too good because then we’d be looking for attention, harassment, and even rape.

- Our family is supposed to be our protector, but a huge number of us are abused, physically and/or orally, inside our homes, by members of our families, and there are no laws to protect us from familial violence.

- In a country where more than half of the population are women, we have only 6 women parliament members, and only one minister is a woman.

- We are required to go from our parents’ house straight to our husband’s house.

- We’re not really Lebanese citizens, we’re just the daughters of Lebanese men. Because if we really did possess a Lebanese citizenship, we’d be able to pass our nationality to our husbands and children; but we can’t.

- And even though we are supposed to be equal in the eyes of the law, we are far, very far from being equal to men.

Their take on the argument that treats Arab feminist movements as westernized and imported:

Feminism is not an imported idea. Every time a woman stands up and refuses to be abused and exploited, every time she speaks up against her abusers, every time a woman believes in her capabilities and pursues her needs and ambitions, every time she resists being a victim or an object or an inferior being, she is being a feminist. And we don’t need any Western movement to teach us that — we’ve been doing it all along! And even though some of you may not call yourself a feminist, we’re sure you’ve been doing it too.

And finally, on Women’s international day, they’re going to hit the streets of Beirut, check their event on Facebook, their posts on their website, in EN and here in AR.

PETITION TO REMOVE THE NOBEL PEACE PRIZE FROM SHIMON PEREZ

PETITION TO REMOVE THE NOBEL PEACE PRIZE FROM M. SHIMON PEREZ: REGARDED AS A WAR CRIMINAL AND SPONSOR OF GENOCIDE AGAINST HUMANITY IN THE GAZA STRIP

We the signatories … … … … …, claiming to be outraged by the attitude of Shimon Perez regarding the war of genocide and ethnic cleansing that the Palestinian people in Gaza Strip endure

Under the name “Operation Cast Lead, Israel launched a military operation against civilians in Gaza who are already living a total blockade (land, sea and air) imposed by the Jewish state from eighteen months. The IDF has used American fighter aircraft F16, Apache helicopters, and shelling from warships, to sow terror and destruction of homes, clinics, mosques, universities, schools, police posts and administrations, in short all the infrastructure already in bad shape and are nevertheless used by the population of Gaza to alleviate the blockade.
Mr. Maxwel Galford, the spokesman of the Special Rapporteur of the UN in charge of the peace agreements in the Middle East said: “In Gaza, life for children and families has become a matter of life or death.” The raid by Israeli aircraft on the camp of Jabalia, has shown an extreme atrocity by the murder of the family “Baâloucha” composed of five sisters who were murdered in their sleep (17 years Tahrir, Ikram 14 years, 12 years old Samar Dina 8 years Jouaher 4 years).

In the Gaza Strip, ambulances are unable to rescue the wounded throughout the territory. In a statement Mr. Jacob Klinberger, the president of the International Committee of the Red Cross said “we saw the wounded who have not survived their injuries because ambulances are prevented from arriving on time. If it ( Israel) does not respect the rules laid down by international humanitarian law, death is simply be pure fate of several people when we could help”. 8 / 01 / 2009.

The Secretary General of United Nations Ban Ki Moon has called for its part, “what is happening in Gaza, the terror and bloodshed” (SG/SM/12025), he called on Israel to a cease-fire and implementation of international law and conventions of human rights.

In his statement (on the EL-Jazeera television) on 9/01/2009, Mr. Berg Fory, a member of the Nobel Committee for Peace, said that the Nobel committee members are ashamed to have awarded the Nobel Prize for Peace to the Israeli President Shimon Perez, especially after watching the Israeli massacres committed against children, women and elderly innocent in the Gaza Strip.

Perez was primarily responsible for the massacre of Qana in southern Lebanon in 1996. This massacre after Operation Grapes of Wrath by the Israeli air force has caused the death of over a hundred civilians, mostly children and women. The shelter in Qana that was bombed, is one of the shelters run by the United Nations, which had housed more than a hundred Lebanese. Mr. Perez was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize along with the Premier of Israel Isaac Rabin and Palestinian President Yasser Arafat.

It is to preserve the essence of peace in the world especially in the Middle East, in solidarity with what is happening in Gaza and against the crimes against humanity that are perpetrated on site:

We ask the Nobel committee and the Norwegian government to withdraw the Nobel Peace Prize to Mr. Shimon Perez, current president of Israel for its crimes against humanity.

It’s just a damn signature

Homosexuality on LBC this Wednesday on A7mar Bil Khatt el 3areed

A friend sent me this, I will try to call the bastards:

I have my reservations on the list presented in this email, but I am busy with my thesis lately, will write on how one should deal with homophobia and discrimination and post-racism soon. Please try to participate and help our just cause.

This is a call to an urgent action by all of us.

Tomorrow Wednesday, January 27 at 9.30 pm (Beirut time), LBC is going to tackle the subject of homosexuality on their show A7mar bel khatt el 3arid.

It is very important for us to watch this show to write about it, blog about it, and comment about it. It is also very important to CALL IN to express support for LGBTQ in Lebanon and to correct whatever wrong things people will be saying on the show.

So please make sure you watch the show tomorrow at 9.30 pm and call the numbers that appear on the screen. Call from Lebanon, the Arab world, and internationally.

When you call, here are some points you should raise:

1. Doctors, psychologists, sociologists, philosophers, and experts all agree the homosexuality is normal. Therefore, it shouldn’t be treated as a topic of “a7mar bil khatt il 3areed”
2. Lebanese media should deal with this topic supportively, not just put homosexuals or transsexuals on display.
3. There are hundreds of thousands of LGBTQ in Lebanon and they are tax-paying citizens. They deserve full rights as anyone else.
4. Last Thursday, two gay men were beaten up brutally by security agents were dressed in civilian clothing on Sassine Square. This inhumanity towards homosexuals is not accepted.

Be careful that your numbers might appear on the caller ID, so you don’t have to state your are gay if you don’t want to. Be brave and call on everyone in Lebanese society to accept homosexuality.

Names and Photos of Israeli War Criminals in Gaza

Via Kawther Salam

I have decided to publish some names and photos of the Israeli military personnel who participated in the so-called “Operation Cast war-criminals_barak_eisenbergLead”, the offensive launched by the Israeli Occupation Forces (IOF) on the Gaza Strip between 27 December and 18 January 2009. The names of these criminals called my attention since the first day of their criminal attack against the Palestinian civilians in Gaza. I consider each person who took part in this IOF and each one whose name appears in this report as a war criminal who should be requested by an international court of justice, just like all other war criminals who were persecuted before…

My decision is a challenge to the State of Israel, to the Israeli attorney general brig-gen-jonathan-lockerhead-of-iaf1Mazuz and the military headquarters, who forbade the media from publishing the names of the Israeli officers who lead “Operation Cast Lead” in Gaza, murdering 1310, and wounding over 5600, over 90% of these casualties being civilians, destroying public and the private property in many parts of towns and cities, and completely razing several areas completely to the ground.

The Israeli Attorney General Menachem Mazuz is conniving with others the war crimes committed in Gaza. These others are Ehud Colonel Ron Ashrov.jpgBarak, Ehud Olmert and his cabinet of criminals, and the military counterpart, Brigadier General Avihai Mandelblit. Chief of Staff Gabi Ashkenazi is equally involved in the war crimes in Gaza. The Attorney General of Israel asked his military counterpart to open a quick investigation among the military as an “alternative” measure to hinder potentially “hundreds” of international lawsuits against Israeli officials alleging war crimes against the Gaza population during the operation has been widely anticipated. There is growing concern in the offices of the Israeli justice and war ministries because they expect a massive wave of lawsuits for human rights violations against Israeli officers and politicians.

Colonel Hartzi Halevi – Paratroops Brigade Commander1The criminal intentions of Menechem Mazuz, namely helping to cover up war crimes of the State of Israel by giving an advice to the military, and by opening a “formal and internal investigations” is a clear fraud planned by the Israeli ministry of justice. Such a behavior is not that of a state, it is the behavior of a criminal organization trying to escape their well deserved punishment.

The military censor of Israel is preventing the media from identifying officers who participated in the Gaza Strip IOF, and divulging information about them which could be used in legal proceedings against them in courts of justice abroad. There is great concern at the defense and the justice ministries that Israeli officers will be singled out in a massive wave of suits for human rights violations.

Eyal Eisenberg2.jpgIn recent days the censor has forbidden publishing the full names and photographs of officers from the level of battalion commander down. It is assumed that the identity of brigade commanders has already been made known. The censor also forbids any reports tying a particular officer of battlefield command rank (lieutenant to lieutenant colonel) to destruction inflicted in a particular area.

The Israeli war criminal number one, Ehud Barak, stated that the State of Israel bears the responsibility for sending IOF troops on missions in Gaza, as well as for defending civilians, and as such it is obligated to grant its full support to these officers and soldiers who participated in the IOF in Gaza. Barak said that no harm should come to officers and soldiers as a result of their Commander of the 401st Brigade Colonel Yigal Slovikinvolvement in the operation.

The war criminal Barak ordered the IOF to set up a team of intelligence and legal experts to collect evidence related to operations in Gaza that could be used to defend military commanders against future lawsuits abroad.

Here are Some Names of the Israeli War Criminals who Operated in Gaza

In one well-known incident, about more 150 Palestinian civilians were gathered by the IOF in a house, and then the house was bombed and shelled. Lt. Col. Capt. Ron Vardi, a war criminal, participated in “Operation Cast Lead” in Gaza.

Col. Pnina Sharvit-Baruch, head of the International Law Department, Military Advocate General’s Office, Israel criminal “Defence” Forces. Sharvit-Baruch legitimized the war crimes operation “Cast Lead” in Gaza. She justified the killing of Palestinian civilians including hundreds of children.

col-pnina-sharvit-baruchUnder Sharvit-Baruch’s command, IDF legal experts legitimized strikes and the collective murders in Gaza, she said to the IDF war criminals during the operation “Cast Lead” in Gaza go-ahead. Sharvit-Baruch and her division believed that the killing of Palestinian civilians in a house whose residents the IDF has warned might be considered legally justified, although the IDF does not actually target civilians in this way. According to a senior official in the international law division, “Our goal is not to tie down the army, but to give it the tools to win in a way that is legal.”

Col. Pnina Sharvit-Baruch, reviewed the international law pertaining to urban warfare. She argued several times, that from a strictly legal point of view Israel was entitled to use artillery against targets in Palestinian urban areas. “If they are launching rockets against us from built-up areas, or building bombs in the basements of apartment buildings, we are within our rights to shell these areas in response,” said Sharvit during a Conference on Urban Warfare in the Territories

Ashkinazi_terrorist_1Lieutenant-General Gabi Ashkenazi, IOF Chief of Staff, whose father was a holocaust survivor from Bulgaria and whose mother was born in Syria. This moral degenerate is the engineer of this new holocaust in Gaza. He committed war crimes in south of Lebanon. Three of his soldiers were captured by the Hizbullah resistance after they illegally crossed into Lebanon as a provocation ordered by him.

Major-General Amos YadlinMajor General Amos Yadlin, Military Intelligence chief, participated in “Operation Cast Lead” in Gaza.

War Criminals Preparation Team

Yuval Diskin, Shin Bet security service chief, the organizer of the war in Gaza. Due to his personal recommendation, the IAF bombed the hospitals and the medical centers of Gaza.

Ehud Olmert, the corrupt Israeli Prime Minster legitimized the War in Gaza together with his cabinet.

Ehud Barak, Israeli War Minister, planned “Operation Cast Lead” in Gaza in order to improve his chances during the next elections.

Tzipi Livni, Foreign Minister of Israel, who leads the Israeli propaganda to legitimize the massacre and destruction in Gaza, planned and coordinated “Operation Cast Lead” in Gaza in order to improve her chances during the next elections

Yuval Diskin.jpgThe names of many other war criminals from the infantry, tanks, combat engineers, artillery, and intelligence who participated in the war crimes in Gaza are still unknown. They should not feel safe either. War crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide are proscribed and prosecuted in all countries of the world in one way or other, and there exists no statute of limitations for such crimes. The “protection” offered by Mazuz and his cronies is weak, first of all because the fact that such “protection” is offered is a implicit admission of guilt, and because national and international statutes specifically address the issue of sham “proceedings which are instituted to protect the guilty”, and because since the Nuremberg proceedings against the German army, following orders is no excuse and does not absolve of culpability. We and others will continue doing whatever is possible to find out the names of as many of the criminals who participated in Gaza as possible, and any information which will put them behind bars.

Free Hossein Derakhshan

I have seen Hoder from a distant in Budapest past summer. He was wearing a “I heart Gaza” shirt. He is in jail now, his family has confirmed, if he wasn’t in jail he would have gone mad on his laptop at the Zionists’ war crimes in occupied Palestine.

I don’t know the guy very well, but after Budapest I added him on Facebook, and HezbAlla was celebrating Samir Kuntar’s freedom. I was there in Southern Beirut (Dahiyah) and I took some pictures and added them on my Facebook and my blog. He posted the album on his Facebook as well and he had a fight with one of the friends on my list who was calling HezbAlla an extremist group.

After posting that album, Hoder linked to my blog on his Persian blog, I was blogging in Arabic then.

Hoder is a good person, he may have done mistakes in the past, but I have met him when he had thought things over, he made a huge LEFT turn, he joined the path of resistance, now he’s in jail.

The godfather of the Iranian blogsphere is in jail and no one is doing anything. I am not Iranian but Iran concerns me.

Most importantly, Hoder matters, he is not going to stay in that cell of his, he is going out and he’s going to give me that “I heart Gaza shirt” of his. This is me signing the petition.

Petition for Hoder

FREE HODER

We, the undersigned, view the circumstances surrounding the Iranian authorities’ arrest of Hossein Derakhshan (hoder.com), one of the most prominent Iranian bloggers, as extremely worrying. Derakhshan’s disappearance, detention at an unknown location, lack of access to his family and attorneys, and the authorities’ failure to provide clear information about his potential charges is a source of concern for us.

The Iranian blogging community is one of the largest and most vibrant in the world. From ordinary citizens to the President, a diverse and large number of Iranians are engaged in blogging. These bloggers encompass a wide spectrum of views and perspectives, and they play a vital role in open discussions of social, cultural and political affairs.

Unfortunately, in recent years, numerous websites and blogs have been routinely blocked by the authorities, and some bloggers have been harassed or detained. Derakhshan’s detention is but the latest episode in this ongoing saga and is being viewed as an attempt to silence and intimidate the blogging community as a whole.

Derakhshan’s own position regarding a number of prisoners of conscience in Iran has been a source of contention among the blogging community and has caused many to distance themselves from him. This, however, doesn’t change the fact that the freedom of expression is sacred for all not just the ones with whom we agree.

We therefore categorically condemn the circumstances surrounding Derakhshan’s arrest and detention and demand his immediate release.
